Asserting that road connectivity poses a major challenge due to geographical location of Jammu and Kashmir, Advisor to the Lt Governor Farooq Ahmad Khan on Sunday said that special measures will be taken, to tackle the challenges being faced by the commuters on the Srinagar-Jammu national highway (due to frequent closure of the road).
''Due to the geographical location of J&K, road connectivity poses a major challenge for the administration. But despite these challenges, the administration tries it's best to make sure that far-flung and remote areas remain connected with their respective district headquarters through road,'' Mr Khan said, after unfurling the national flag and taking salute at the march past presented by different contingents on Republic Day at the S K Cricket Stadium, here.
He said the problems on Srinagar-Jammu national highway is also a challenge. But, he said measures will be taken to tackle the challenges being face on the highway.
The Advisor said that connecting Kashmir with rest of the country through railway is also a top priority. "People should not only be able to visit Srinagar through rail, but should also go to far-flung areas in Kupwara and Baramulla," he said
He said Kashmir valley is facing harsh winter this year, even as heavy snowfall was recorded since November last year. "I would like to congratulate different departments, who ensured availability of essential commodities in the valley, despite harsh weather conditions," he said.
 "I would also like to congratulate security forces for not only helping people, but also ensuing peace and brotherhood in the valley," he added
The advisor to LG also spoke about various initiatives taken by the J&K administration and the Centre, including the back to village programme.
"For the first time in 70 years, 1.3 lakh people were given pension in J&K. During the next three months, 1.7 lakh more people will be given pension. About 3200 girls were given marriage assistance and the money was directly credited in their accounts," he added.
He also spoke about the Panchayat and Block Development Council (BDC) elections, which were conducted by the J&K administration, despite boycott by majority of regional political parties, seeking assurance on Articles 370 and 35A.
